Professional Fuel Loss Detection
Integrating data analytics with operational
experience for better dealer experience
Why is Fuel Loss important ?
Safe and effective storage of fuel, which is potentially hazardous liquid, is vital to protect the environment. Any leak from underground pipelines and storage tanks at retail sites may contaminate the soil and if the leak reaches groundwater level, the pollution can quickly spread to nearby communities, needing costly remediation activities. A fuel leak is also a safety risk which may cause explosions and fires, thus retailers have a duty to minimize the risks for protecting their employees and customers.
Inevitably, fuel losses mean write-offs in financial perspective. Tangible loss can potentially reach thousands of Euros; a site with nearly 10000 liters/day throughput where its nozzles have been overdispensing above official permissible limits for a while, would experience loss of 20000 € in six months.
How do we detect Fuel Loss?
We receive data available via automation systems in retail sites; then apply our – EPA accredited – Statistical Inventory Reconciliation (SIR) algorithm through our specialized software. In order to provide enhanced loss detection service to our clients, we monitor the sites daily through our dedicated analysts team rather than just relying on automated data. This means we can first verify the data in order to identify the cause of any losses/gains more effectively.
Once operational processes are accomplished, we recommend appropriate actions such as tests on individual tanks, pumps or lines, or checking CCTV if theft is suspected, or doing fuel quality test if cross-fill delivery is suspected. We ensure the problem is resolved before we close our investigation.
Our Loss Detection Process
Our wetstock management technology uses specialized Statistical Inventory Reconciliation (SIR) algorithm on tank stock, sale, delivery and temperature data to identify loss and gain conditions in fuel tanks; in another word to detect tank systems containing lower or higher fuel levels than expected. Our SIR algorithm, which is a key element of our loss detection suite, is accredited by U.S Environmental Protection Agency with a loss detection capacity of 4.5 liters per day (1.2 gallons per day). Integrating this analytics with our 13-years operational experience pinpointing issues at almost every points in site infrastructure from offset-fill pipe to fuel dispenser, we deliver the perfect solution for retailers.
In order to introduce right solution, we follow three stages:
- Daily data verification and delivery validation provides clean data and detection of sudden loss or gains
- SIR analysis identifies smaller losses, which can not be detected by basic data reconciliation
- Investigation management and reporting deliver correct diagnosis and follow-up for suspicious situtations
